JClass FAQ

What is JClass?

Java developers world-wide are using JClass to create professional GUI applications. All JClass components are 100% Pure Java, support easy-to-use developer interfaces, are available for JDK 1.0.2, JDK 1.1 and JFC 1.x/Swing with the same API, and are supported in all popular IDEs. The JClass family includes:

  • JClass BWT, a Java GUI toolkit that enhances and extends AWT with over 20 components.
  • JClass LiveTable, the essential Java grid/table to easily display and manipulate tables and forms
  • JClass Chart, a powerful component to embed sophisticated graphs and charts
  • JClass Field, a versatile text component, provides data input and validation for popular data types

.

What computing platforms are supported by JClass components?

JClass components can be used on all computing platforms that are supported by Java. JClass components are qualified on Windows 95, Windows NT, and Solaris.

What is the difference between the "T", "S", and "unlettered" versions of each JClass product?

To accommodate the various types of environments Java developers may be using, we have developed versions of our JClass products that can be used for specific Java Development Kits (JDKs). The following lists the differences between the different versions:

.

  • "T" version: uses the JDK 1.0.2 API and implements "Transitional" JavaBeans
  • "Unlettered" version: uses the JDK 1.1.x and incorporates full JavaBean implementation
  • "S" version: uses the JDK 1.1/JFC 1.1 (Swing-compatible)

    In the near future a "J" version will be available, which will work with JFC 1.1/Swing on JDK 1.1 and JFC/JDK 1.2 respectively.

    When downloading, choose whichever version is best suited to your target platform and audience.

Can I use JClass components in my Integrated Development Environment (IDE)?

The easy-to-use JClass family of JavaBeans, (new to version JClass 4.0), can be used in any IDE that can handle JavaBeans, including such popular IDEs as:

  • Inprise's Borland JBuilder
  • Symantec Visual Café
  • IBM VisualAge for Java
  • Powersoft PowerJ
  • SuperCede
  • Halcyon Instant Basic for Java
  • Imperial Software Technology's Visaj
  • Microsoft Visual J++
  • Silverstream
  • Sun Java Workshop

Do I need to pay any royalty fees when I create an application or applet using JClass components?

No, provided that:
  • you distribute the applet you build only in conjunction with and as a part of your Web pages, and distribute the class libraries only as an integral part of your end-user, stand-alone application;
  • your Web pages or application(s) are targeted at end-users, and are not a development tool;
  • you do not use Bluestone Consulting's or the Sitraka's name, logo or trademark to market your Web pages or application;
  • you include a valid copyright notice on your Web pages and software products; and
  • you agree to indemnify, hold harmless, and defend Bluestone Consulting and Sitraka and its suppliers from and against any claims or lawsuits, including attorneys fees, that arise or result from the use or distribution of your Web pages and/or applications.

Time/Connection Factors
Make sure that you allow plenty of time for the Java classes to be downloaded and interpreted. This can require as much as 10 minutes if there is a slow network or modem connection or if your browser does not have a JIT Java interpreter.

Is Java Enabled?
Make sure that Java is enabled in the browser. If you have a long-running browser session, or many browser windows up, exit the browser, start a new one and try the demos again.

CLASSPATH Conflict
If you have a CLASSPATH set on your system, please unset it, as this will allow the browser you are using the default of searching through the URL for needed classes that are part of JClass, and not on your local CLASSPATH.

If the problems persist, let us know by sending a message containing the following information:

  • the URL of the problem,
  • your platform and O/S version, (i.e. WindowsNT 4.0)
  • your browser and version, (i.e. Netscape 4.0)
  • the error messages/symptoms, (Netscape users: Options->Show Java Console; Microsoft IE: \windows\java\javalog.txt)

What type of support can I get for JClass products?

Every license comes with Standard Support, which provides 30-days of direct technical support via telephone, email or fax for installation issues, product usage issues JClass programming questions, and explanation of error messages. Standard Support also provides users with access to the FAQ Documents on the Bluestone Consulting Web site and Sitraka's Web site, the JClass Knowledge Base, and the JClass forum newsgroup.

Additional Gold Support with Subscription (renewable annually) can also be purchased, which in addition to the services provided with Standard Support also provides the user with an unlimited number of support cases through a Customer Support Engineer via telephone, email or fax for product-related questions.

Per Incident Support is available to those customers outside the 30-day initial support period who are not enrolled in the Gold Support with Subscription program.

The time/date axis feature of JClass Chart is the only component of the product that uses dates, and it uses them for display purposes only, so strictly speaking it is not affected by Year 2000 compliance. The time/date axis is constructed so that it can easily represent dates well into the next millennium.

JClass Field uses a millennium threshold resource that controls how two digit date are interpreted. Field stores everything internally as fully-specified years i.e. always as "1998" and not "98".

Do JClass components come with source code?

JClass components are sold either as a standard bytecode version, or with source.

I have purchased JClass with source code, how do I build?

Our source code comes with make files that we use to build our JClass source into bytecode. Our make files are included with the source as a starting point or reference to compose your own make files. Your own make file would be similar, but unique to your development environment. You can also use a software development tool that manages your source code revisions and builds.
